It's a wrap...some final pictures!

The girls had so much fun on Immigration Day!  Their research was superb, and their immigrant characters very authentic looking.  Everyone learned a lot about other countries, and that amazing period of time when "The Golden Door" was open.  Make sure and ask them about the beautiful group watercolors they did!

Final Dates and Math Packets for 5th Grade

Things to Remember

5th Grade Math Packets are in the girls' folders.  They need to be completed and brought to school next fall.  These packets were sent to us by the middle school math department.

Please send two brown grocery bags to school tomorrow, so we can start sending the girls' things home! Seems like yesterday that you were delivering them!

Thursday is the class party.  Please send your daughter with her swimming suit, cap, and goggles.
The girls will eat lunch in the cafeteria, as usual.  Then there is a special gelato treat, and  from 12:00 to 1:00 they will swim. After that, the Fourthies will watch a movie in the LSAR!  Thank you, Parents, for sponsoring this wonderful party!  The girls are really beyond excited!

Tuesday, June 6, Kenny Center  LS Final Assembly  1:00            Girls will come to school at 12:15 on that day and meet us in the classroom.

Reception will follow for Fourthies and their families outside the Kenny Center.

We will be practicing for Final Assembly this week.  Please send the shoes your daughter will be wearing on Thursday, so they can practice walking up the stairs and on the stage!

Busch Gardens or Starbucks...it was all fun!

May I just brag for a minute about this class?  First of all, those girls who made the commitment to be in choir for a year, along with the Strings girls, deserve a round of applause.  That is no small thing.  It means that you do not have Study Hall, so you have to really plan your time.  Every time the choir sang and the girls in Strings played for us, they were given well-deserved accolades!  Beautiful! Let's not forget that both groups won awards!

On Friday, I took the girls who remained with me to Buoyers for ice cream, but guess what? It was closed.  No whining from these girls!  Soon we were on to Plan B!  Starbucks, and luckily, they have plenty of choices without caffeine.  The girls were so well-behaved and so polite and so darling that I loved every minute of being with them.  Yes, I was their teacher, but really, I felt like their lucky grandmother also! We hated for the morning to end, so we took a  side trip to Irresistible's, where we had a little math lesson.  It just so happened they were having a sale..........perfect for calculating discounts...and they did do a bit of shopping!

Enjoy these pictures!

Grandparents'Day....Success Story

Well, Grandparents' Day was an outstanding success!  Over 700 on campus, and I think that everyone had a great time.  I hope that you were able to read the wonderful Haiku that your daughters wrote for their special guests.  It was a wonderful exercise for them.  They had to really reflect on the relationships they had with their grandparents and special friends, as well as on the positive effect they had on their lives!

The girls loved showing them the projects they worked on recently, and I think that it is safe to say that everyone was pretty impressed with what your daughters had learned.  I managed to take only a few pictures because I was having a great time talking to our guests!

Grandparents! Our Special Guests this Friday....

The girls are so excited to have their grandparents visit the lower school this Friday.  They have been working on an extra special bulletin board just for their grandparents!  We haven't been studying the Decades for nothing, so don't worry they will make sure everyone sees it.  As well, we'll give them a peek into the life of a student in 2017.  We've been playing some Sixties and Seventies music just to set the mood.

I know that you have received a ton of information from the school already, but just to be sure, we will see the girls' special guests at 12:45 in the LSAR this Friday.  At 1:15 they will proceed to either the classroom or Religion, and then they will flip at 1:45.  There will be plenty of volunteers to direct them to the correct place.  It will be a fun-filled day for all.  We are honored to have them with us!

Broadway at St. Cat's....Fourthies are the Stars

Next stop...Broadway!  Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory had everyone humming the songs and dancing like an Oompa loompa!  Didn't the girls do a fabulous job...whether you were a dancer or you had speaking lines...everyone was able to shine. The Seniors loved the play, and there wasn't a dry eye when the lower school sang  "I Saw a Ship a Sailin".  It seems like yesterday that the Seniors were Fourthies in my class...it does to them also!

Here are a couple of pictures of your Thespians!

Next stop Grandparents' Day!  Get ready! It's next Friday!

Meanwhile, Strings has a concert tonight at 7 at St. Chris.  Congratulations, Girls!  That shows a lot of hard work, and we are proud of you.

The girls are learning about Probability in Math.  It's a very cool unit.  They are making spinners and predicting the results in mathematical terms.....a lot of fun, but some great learning also.  This leads right into the next unit on designing an efficient kitchen...okay, no correlation...YET!  You can tell we need the updated version of this book because this unit is designed for a smaller kitchen, not the uber large ones of 2017!  Anyway, it is all about efficiency, so find your tape measure because your daughter will be needing it soon.  This is one thing that they can't Google!

We have also started learning the Northeastern States and Capitals.  The girls will learn the states by region, so we will slowly make our way across the continent.  By the time we are finished they will be able to correctly place them on the map and spell them correctly also.  The Fourthie Website has some great sites to help them, and I have posted one on my blog also.  Try them all and see which ones you like best!  We'll be playing some good old "Travel" in the classroom also!

Dear Parents,
On Monday, April 3rd, 3rd  and 4th grade students will go to our Goochland campus to learn about helmet and bike safety. To participate in bike day, your daughter will need to bring a helmet to school. Any helmet with the CPSC, Snell or ASTM stamp of approval is a perfectly safe helmet. To help ensure that all students have a helmet on bike day, please send helmets in by Thursday, March 30th.

The 3rd grade will leave St. Catherine’s at 9am and return at 12:30pm. The 4th grade will leave St. Catherine’s at 11am and return at 2:30pm. The entire group will eat lunch together from 11:30-12pm.

Please make sure that your daughter wears appropriate clothes and that she packs a lunch, water bottle, and sunscreen on Monday, April 3rd.

Before bike day, please take some time with your daughter to review biking and helmet safety by going to www.youtube.com and searching “NHTSA's Bike Safe, Bike Smart” for a short video.
We look forward to teaching your daughters about biking skills and safety.

Innovations Galore

You can certainly tell that these fourth grade girls have been involved for four years in the true aspects of STEAM.  They understand in a unique way how the design process works.  The reason?
They have so much experience with designing and building a variety of structures. Not only can they build, but they also can articulate why they made certain structural changes and so forth!

Here are a few pictures and videos for you to enjoy!  The first graders you see are from Miss Saffelle's class!
